Oh, to be present, fully centered and serene! Every Day!
And let me share this with you - it is completely do-able.
There is a lot of hype about mindfulness, and in my opinion, not enough people who really understand what it is and how powerful an improvement mindfulness can effect in our lives.
I I think the most helpful way to think about it is like this:
We learn a lot of behaviours and skills in our formative years. Some stuff is good, like good manners and learning to share toys and multiplication!
Others, not so good.
I am talking about the limiting beliefs we pick up about ourselves - I am not good enough, or I am to blame for my mother leaving or my father drinking.
I am talking about the beliefs we gave up, like the knowledge that we are all born good enough, unique and special.
A simple example is that all kindergarten kids are just naturally creative and enthusiastic - yet how many adults are intimidated by doing something creative?
How about we go back to the beginning, and attentively and consciously examine all our beliefs?
And see which of our beliefs are ours, and which beliefs belongs to our parents, our teachers, our friends, our politicians...
In The Road Less Traveled (one of my absolutely most favourite books!), M.Scott Peck tells us that unless we have thoroughly examined each of our beliefs, they are not truly ours.
This is a hugely freeing concept. We can choose new beliefs!!!
That means that if we can, from this day forward, start examining our beliefs and then choose an appropriate adult response, we are on the road to mindfulness, on the road to emotional freedom!
Hard work at first, I give you that, but the great thing is that the more we consciously remain focused on examining the validity of our beliefs, the more we can choose new healthy beliefs that do not have their origins in the mindset of a helpless child, but are formulated by an empowered adult. And it becomes an automatic, healthier habit as we keep on practicing - much easier the more we do it, just like learning to ride a bicycle!
Tomorrow more on the other big cornerstone of mindfulness...
So this is where I tell you more about my journey...
Maybe there is something in my story you can use to make your own life better. I really do hope that my random ramblings are of use to someone out there!
