I am often really bad at having fun.
But I am getting better. Not an easy task for someone who has been a little adult since yea high.
Nor is it easy for someone who puts high value on not being wrong, not messing up, not failing. All those beliefs and learned behaviours simply mean that there is no time left for fun, what with being so busy with the impossible!
And talk about exhaustion! Way too tired for fun, you know what I mean?
But I am so getting better...
Today was a great day! It started with helping a customer choose a new stained glass lampshade, which will be unusual and great fun to design yeah, my job! Then 2 mums and 5 kids came for hand and foot prints! That was interesting!
Normally on a pretty full day already, I would just give up on personal pleasure. But not today. We just decided that there is enough day left to go find ourselves some down-time, and we headed to the Garden show on the bikes.
It turned out to be a splendid ride. At the show I fell in love with a life-sized fairy garden (why, oh why, did I not take a photo!!! - I WANT a fairy garden!) And topped off a pleasant day with lunch and good coffee and great conversation with friends.
And if I went with my normal workaholic ways, none of these simple pleasures would have been mine to cherish!
So what I am saying is this: anyone can find an excuse to be busy, or find something to do. We may even convince ourselves that, that which we need so much to be doing, is of great importance, that it cannot wait, and that the world will stop turning on its axle if we get off the roller coaster.
Funny thing this... it does not!
A life which is out of balance tells us something is wrong.
If we constantly overwork, we find escape or worth in it. If we constantly underachieve, we keep ourselves from judgement and possible failure.
I had to come to terms with the uncomfortable truth: "I found great worth in being busy". Well, that is just a rubbish idea, and a bad habit. But a longstanding one, so it took some perseverance and self-convincing for me to let go of that one. "I am still important even if I am not so damn busy!" You would think that would be obvious. But it took some hard talk from myself...
So if I tell you that - if you still find having fun for fun's sake difficult - there are several health benefits to having fun, can you convince yourself to make a date with fun?
"Making a habit of relaxing, engaging in activities you enjoy, and spending time with people who make you happy will yield sustained and increasingly positive benefits of consistently lower stress, positive feelings, better sleep, better coping abilities, and improved relationships." - 8 health benefits of having fun
The goal here?
Get in balance. There is a time to work and be serious. There is a time to play and have fun.
Balance is the goal.
So...... whose job is it anyway, this "creating fun in your own life" job? Yes, that is right! It is our own job!
So how about we see if we can schedule in a bit of balance this week? Baby steps...
So this is where I tell you more about my journey...
Maybe there is something in my story you can use to make your own life better. I really do hope that my random ramblings are of use to someone out there!
